Between Durham, and Peterlee in County Durham in the north east of England, lies the small village of Haswell Plough, situated between South Hetton and Shotton Colliery on Salters Lane, a few miles from Easington and the A19 trunk road. Little is known of the history of the village prior to medieval times. The remains of a medieval chapel are recorded in a charter dated around 1300 but further back in its history, there was certainly an Anglo-Saxon settlement as the name is derived from Old English meaning ‘hazel spring or stream’.
