Hanwell is a west-London suburb located between Ealing and Southall. A former farming village, it expanded with the coming of the railway in 1838. The Wharncliffe Viaduct, engineered by Brunel, was built to cross the Brent Valley, and it remains Hanwell's most imposing landmark. Lots of houses and schools were constructed. The Cuckoo School for poor children, opened in 1856, later enrolled one pupil destined for greatness: Charlie Chaplin. Parts of the old school now house the community centre. A typical feature of Victorian Britain was the "lunatic asylum".
