Grantown-on-Spey is a town, known as the Capital of Strathspey, situated in the Badenoch and Strathspey area in the Central Highlands of Scotland, lying on the River Spey at the north-side of the Cairngorms National Park, 14 miles from Aviemore. Surrounded by the ancient Caledonian forest, Grantown-on-Spey was a planned Georgian town, named and designed by James Grant in 1766. The 16th century Ballindalloch Castle home to the Macpherson-Grants, since 1546, stands 15 miles down the valley. The town has many historically interesting buildings with Georgian and Victorian architecture.
