Grange-over-Sands as we see it today is a product of the railway age, when what had been an inaccessible fishing hamlet metamorphosed into an elegant seaside resort. The best way to get to Grange-over-Sands is on the Furness Railway line that runs between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness, and which first came here in 1887, crossing the estuary over the scenic viaduct at Arnside a mile or so up from Grange. The town’s railway station still reflects the Victorian and Edwardian heyday of the place, when Lancashire’s industrial magnates built splendid houses there as weekend retreats (until 1974 Grange was in fact part of Lancashire, but was reorganized into the new county of Cumbria then).
