Girvan is a large sea-side resort town in the district of Carrick on the coast in South Ayrshire, Scotland, situated 21 miles south of Ayr and 30 miles north of Stranraer. Girvan was created burgh of barony 1668. Girvan was once associated with shoemaking, weaving and fishing and with the arrival of the railway in 1860, Girvan became a popular tourist resort with the sheltered harbour and beautiful sandy beaches. The scenic backdrop of the Galloway hills and the sea offer panoramic views over to the dome of the Ailsa Craig, raising 1114ft out of the Firth of Forth.
