Gifford is a tranquil village in East Lothian in Scotland situated on the Gifford Water, four miles south of Haddington. Gifford is well-known as the birthplace of Reverend John Witherspoon (1722-94), after immigrating to the United States of America was a signatory to the American Declaration of Independence in 1784 and the first president of Princeton University, his memorial plaque stands on a wall near the Parish Church. Historically interesting features include Yester House built in 1694, the Mercat Cross dating from 1710, the Town Hall built in 1887 and the white T-plan Yester Parish Church dating from 1710 with 15th century bell and 17th century pulpit Surrounded by picturesque countryside Gifford is a popular tourist destination attracting golfers, pony trekkers and walkers en-route to the Lammermuir Hills and the Southern Upland Way.
