Gatehouse-of-Fleet is a tranquil village in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, situated 6 miles north-west of Kirkcudbright at the mouth of the Water-of-Fleet. The village owes it existence to the military road built by James VI, a ‘gait-house’ or inn was built c1610 to serve travellers using the route and by 1700 it was established as a cattle market. In 1760 the village was founded as an estate village which then developed into a thriving industrial centre during the 19th century.
