The market town of Garstang, half-way between Preston and Lancaster, is well worth the short detour from the A6. Garstang is a crossroads town. It was on the old Great North West Highway from London to Edinburgh that dates back to Roman times. It was a significant stopping place on the Viking route between Dublin and York (underlined by the major Viking hoard found at nearby Claughton). Lord Derby, whose Greenhalgh castle, now in ruins, can still be seen over the Wyre, was given the town by Henry VII.
