Galashiels is a historic town in the Borders region of Scotland situated on the Gala Waters at a junction with the Tweed River, five miles north of Selkirk and 28 miles south-east of Edinburgh. The town was granted Burgh of Barony in 1599. Galashiels grew as a mill town, mills were built in 1780 and by 1882 there were 21 mills in town. Although the textile industry went into decline Galashiels remains an important centre for tweed, tartan and cashmere, Lochcarron of Scotland is a popular attraction; it has a visitor centre, shop and guided tours.
