The village of Fulford is these days more or less a part of York, though retaining a distinct identity, just a couple of miles south of the city centre. Access is easy, as the settlement is just off the A64 ring-road. The Battle of Fulford took place in the area on September 20 1066, where Harold’s forces in the North were defeated by the Viking army of Harald Hardrada and King Harold’s treacherous brother Tostig. Though the Vikings were defeated shortly afterwards at Stamford Bridge the loss at Fulford was significant – had the Vikings lost at Fulford Harold’s own army would have been less exhausted at Hastings.
