Frosterley lies eighteen miles west of Durham in County Durham and twenty six miles south west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north east of England, close to the confluence of the rivers Wear and Bolihop Burn between Stanhope and Wolsingham. The village of Frosterley itself has medieval origins although Mesolithic flints and stones have been found in the vicinity and a bronze spearhead, found in a local quarry, dates back to the late Bronze Age, around 1000BC. The village has maintained its medieval character despite many of the original houses having long been replaced.
