Forest Gate is a suburb in east London's borough of Newham and the place where Epping Forest once swept down to its southern limits. This part of the forest has since been cleared, although pockets of trees remain in Wanstead Flats, a neighbouring grassland which is one of several places claiming to be the real-life Itchycoo Park of the Small Faces' 1967 hit single. Forest Gate is hardly one of London's glitzier districts, and so its celebrity links may be surprising: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jimi Hendrix are among its distinguished former inhabitants.
