Until the beginning of the 20th Century, Filton was very much a small farming village. In 1907 the northern terminus of Bristol Tramways was moved from Horfield to Filton. Tram production commenced in Filton in 1908 and by 1920 the first aeroplanes were being produced at Filton. Over the years Filton grew to become a suburb of Bristol. During the Second World War, aircraft production included the Blenheim, Beaufort, Beaufighter and Brigand. In fact, the importance of aircraft production at Filton was such that a squadron of Supermarine Spitfires had to be stationed there for protection following a German air raid.
