It has been sacked more times than the England manager but Dunbar is still standing, even if it’s present day importance is of less strategic significance now that age-old squabbles between the Scots and the English have subsided. As early as the Iron Age, Dunbar was an important fort; it’s location on the eastern flank of Scotland marked it as an important centre for trade, its port seeing much traffic. Significantly, it was vulnerable to attacks from Scotland’s Nordic neighbours.
