Dorchester-on-Thames is a village on the Thames in Oxfordshire, at the confluence of the River Thames with its tributary the River Thame, 9 miles south of Oxford. The Romans built a town here, linking it to a military camp at Alchester to the north. It was the first ecclesiastical centre of Wessex and the seat of Anglo-Saxon bishops. Dorchester Abbey is the village's parish church and a tourist attraction. In the 12th century the church was enlarged to serve a community of Augustinian canons. King Henry VIII dissolved the Abbey in 1536.
