Not so very long ago, it was a wasteland. Today Docklands is London's newest and most vibrant community, a place where thousands live, shop, work and play. Docklands covers eight square miles of the East End, surrounding the Thames where it passes Bermondsey Riverside, Wapping, Surrey Docks, Limehouse, the Isle Of Dogs, the Royal Docks and Beckton. These are places whose docks - formerly part of the Port of London - had closed by 1980, leaving the land derelict. The regeneration plan launched in 1981 wasn't without teething problems.
