Diss, a few miles from the Suffolk boarder, is a crossroads town, lying on the highway from Norwich to London (the A140), and the road between Thetford to Lowestoft. It is also on the main railway line between the county city and the capital, and prettily situated on the north bank of the river Waveney. Not surprisingly then it is a market town, and has been for centuries. As the centre of local agriculture it also houses what was the last working corn market in the country, opened in 1854 with suitably grandiose classical portico.
