The town of Dereham (the prefix East lately dropped) is situated some twelve miles to the west of Norwich on the A47. Dereham is the archetypal Norfolk market town, a place to breathe in the character of rural East Anglia, an experience that can be deepened with a visit to the Norfolk museum of rural life at Gressenhall two miles outside Dereham. Established in Saxon times by Withburga, daughter of the ruler of Anglia, King Anna, Dereham was from the outset a religious centre, with a nunnery at its heart.
