High above the red cliffs of the East Devon coast, lies the resort of Dawlish. The popular resort has many good shops, cafes and restaurants for year-round tourists. In early times the area was known as “Deawiscâ€, Celtic for “Devil waterâ€, Attributed to the strong waters of Dawlish Water, a rivulet which runs through the town out to sea and occasionally swept away livestock. Running alongside Dawlish Water is a park with bowling green, bandstand and hatchery for waterfowl. During the 19th Century, Dawlish became a popular watering place among the aristocracy, who would arrive for the Summer with their entire households.
