A small but busy village near Knebworth in Hertfordshire, Datchworth has Saxon origins and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. This village is the result of the merger of other smaller villages such as Painters Green. It retains a green in the centre, which is the site of the whipping post, whose last recorded use for public flogging was in 1665. Previously there were stocks too, last utilized in 1899, but they are gone now. There is a small museum explaining the village history and with a display of over 800 local artefacts in a former blacksmith’s shop.
