The town of Darwen is to be found around 4 miles south of Blackburn and is believed to take its name from the river and is interpreted to mean “river where oak trees grow†and the town was originally known as “derewentâ€. The derivation of this name, it is suggested, being Saxon in origin. High in the Pennines close to the moors sheep roamed and the woollen industry was just beginning as a cottage industry. From this humble start Darwen was to become Darwen a powerhouse of industrial production in the 19th century with cotton mills, print and bleach works, paperworks, foundries and machine works.
