Dalbeattie is an attractive town in Dumfries and Galloway in south-west Scotland situated opposite Dalbeattie Forest in the wooded valley on the Urr Water 14 miles south-west of Dumfries. Evidence of early settlers includes the remains of Bronze and Iron-Age hill-forts on the high ground around the Urr Water and a Roman fort on Buittle Hill. The fast flowing Dalbeattie Burn was used to power mills from c1600 and a small Clachan existed in the area from c1658, records show a school-master in Dalbeattie in 1751.
