Culross is a historic village in west Fife in Scotland situated seven miles west of Dunfermline overlooking the River Forth. Culross was a religious centre from the 6th century believed to be the birthplace of St Mungo the patron saint of Glasgow where Culross Abbey, a small Cistercian monastery, was built in 1217, the monks discovered and began mining the coal in the area. From 1575-1625 coal was mined from the unusual off-shore Moat Pit, the other main industry was salt-panning. Culross was a busy prosperous village and awarded Royal Burgh status from 1588.
