Crystal Palace is a residential area of south London named after a magnificent exhibition hall that once towered over the neighbourhood. The building, made of glass and iron, was originally constructed in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851 - an international celebration of art and industry. Three years after the exhibition finished, the palace was rebuilt (and extended) on Sydenham Hill, one of the highest points in London. It was surrounded by a Victorian pleasure ground where many events, including sports, were held.
