Situated nine miles south west of Yeovil, the town of Crewkerne is well connected by road, rail and river. It lies on the River Parrett and the A30, and is also served by the West of England Main Line Railway. Crewkerne was mentioned in the will of the Saxon King Alfred, although it was known back then as Crocern, or Cruaern. It was a royal manor at the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. The town prospered in medieval times due to the textile industry, its wealth preserved in its beautiful 15th century church, St Bartholomew's, which stands on the site of an earlier Saxon church.
