Fondly described as "the capital of the Weald of Kent", the small market town of Cranbrook retains the pretty, medieval character of its past. To wander through the winding streets and alleyways lined with a jumble of buildings dating back to the 15th Century is to be transported into a bygone era. Cranbrook is a place where, at various times, Elizabeth 1 put her feet up at the George Inn (now a chic hotel), suspected witches were marched off for hanging, smugglers ruled the roost and Daniel Defoe reputedly wrote "Robinson Crusoe".
