Crail is an ancient fishing village overlooking the Firth of Forth on the east-coast of Fife in Scotland known as the East Neuk situated four miles east of Anstruther and 10 miles south-east of St. Andrews. The settlement dates back to the 800s and became a thriving centre by the 1100’s famous for its export of ‘Crail Capons’ a type of dried/smoked haddock. Crail had the largest medieval marketplace in Europe and was awarded royal burgh status in 1178. Crail is an idyllic sea-side resort, the quaint village has little cottages and narrow cobbled streets leading down to the small picturesque harbour sheltered by cliffs, it is a popular tourist destination with its hotel dating back to the 1700’s, there is a caravan and camping park, self-catering accommodation, shops and places to eat out.
