Congleton is at the Eastern edge of the Cheshire Plain at the southern reaches of the Pennines. First mentioned in the Doomsday Book Congleton grew at a rapid pace. By the 1600’s the main occupation in the town was farming and almost everyone was involved with farming as either a primary or supplementary occupation – nearly every innkeeper, mercer ( a dealer of cloth) and shoemaker had livestock or farmed the land for food. Despite Congleton’s early link with the cloth trade it wasn’t until the late 1700’s that the first silk mill was erected in Congleton and this mechanisation set the standard and opened the way for ribbon weaving and cotton spinning to become established in the area.
