Comber is a small, historic town, famous throughout County Down for its potatoes. Located at the north-western end of Strangford Lough, the town became a centre for linen production and grain processing in the 1700s. It subsequently established a whiskey distillery, which closed in 1953, although a rare bottle turns up every now and again with an equally eye-catching price. At the heart of Comber is the town square with its statue of local war hero Major General Robert "Rollo" Gillespie. Also born here was Thomas Andrews, who designed - and died with - the Titanic.
