Colne is to be found nestling in one of the valleys of the Pennine hills north of Manchester in the County of Lancashire. It can trace its history back to the Stone Age, and whilst there is no direct evidence that the Romans settled here Roman artefacts have been found in the area. The area around the church, which dates back to around 1100AD, is where town commenced its growth, by the mid 16th century the local population had grown to around 1500 relying on local resources and water power weaving, sheep farming, tanners and brewers were all establishing themselves in the area and it was this wealth of local resources that saw massive growth here in the 18th century.
