The village of Clearwell is 3 miles south of the ancient town of Coleford: although the village is Saxon in origin there has been human activity in and around Clearwell for millennia. The Romans were the first to exploit the mineral riches, especially iron ore, on a large scale. The village was once named Wellington "the place of the spring" then Clowerwell meaning "spring among the clover" from which Clearwell is derived. A 14th century town cross dominates the centre of the village and there is a wealth of fine buildings to be found; the Wyndham Arms dates from the 13th century as does the Tudor Farmhouse Hotel and Platwall House has an 18th century front on a Tudor back.
