The City of London - also known as the Square Mile - is the oldest part of the capital. Around 200 AD, the Romans built a defence wall around the settlement. Remnants of this ancient London wall still exist, and its boundaries have not changed a great deal. The area it once enclosed is the City, which has expanded outwards a little and these days marks its borders with black bollards and, at major entrances, statues of dragons. The City has endured many disasters, with the Great Plague of 1665 followed the next year by the Great Fire of London.
