Cinderford has grown from humble beginnings to become on of the largest towns in the Forest of Dean. First mentioned in 1258 as Cinder or Synder Ford it was the place where a trackway from the ferry crossing at Newnham to Monmouth crossed the Soudley Brook. The original settlement built up aground the ford ; which was replaced by a bridge in 1647. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries the village had began to develop as more coal mines were opened causing an influx of workers and their families.
