The river Taw rises on Dartmoor and one of its tributaries, the Little Dart, flows through the small hilltop town of Chulmleigh. The woodland around Chulmleigh and Eggesford Forest is quite ancient and walkers will enjoy numerous scenic routes in this quiet, unspoilt countryside. Many interesting plants are to be found including the wood anemone, wood sorrel and spurge. In Heywood Wood are earth ramparts of a Norman motte and bailey castle. There are also unusual trees such as the chile pine and western red cedar.
