18 miles (27k) to the northeast of Cheltenham, at the its northern edge, lies the town of Chipping Campden regarded by some as the best of all Cotswold towns. The town`s name is derived from the Saxon "Camperdene" meaning - valley with fields - and the Old English "Cepgnge" or Chipping meaning - Market. Chipping Campden was probably one of the most important wool markets in England in the medieval period, with the fine Cotswold wool being exported all over England and the European continent. This period of wealth has left Chipping Campden with many fine buildings; the Woolstaples Hall in the High Street built in 1340 and William Grevel`s house of 1380 the oldest in a row of fine buildings amongst them.
