Chippenham owes its existence to a horseshoe-shaped meander in the River Avon which created an ideal defensive position being surrounded by water on three sides. The strategic importance of this arrangement wasn't lost on the Saxon King Alfred The Great who had his administrative seat there. One of the West of England's principle market towns, it has hosted the world famous Chippenham Folk Festival for many decades. Situated a few miles from the M4 the town is also on Brunel's Great Western Railway running between Bristol and London and retains some magnificent railway arches built by the great engineer.
