The town of Chagford in the heart of Devon shelters beneath a wooded hillside at the Northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. “Chag†Means gorse and there was originally only a ford across the river Teign. Settled for more than 4000 years, it became prosperous due to the tin trade and export of locally produced wool. The sanctuary of the 15th Century church of St. Michael has an inscription dedicated to Mary Whiddon, who was shot and killed on the church steps after her marriage in 1641 – believed to have provided R D Blackmore with the inspiration for “Lorna Dooneâ€.
