Castleton village stands at the head of the Vale of Hope at the heart of the Peak District National Park. It is surrounded on 3 sides by steep hills, one of which, Mam Tor, supports the remains of a Celtic hill fort. All the roads and winding paths in Castleton lead to the main street and the village green is flanked by traditional Derbyshire limestone buildings. Although there are six pubs, cafes and many gift shops selling trinkets fashioned from Blue John, it is on the surrounding hills and what lies underneath them that lures many visitors to Castleton.
