Carlisle is a cathedral city of some 72,000 inhabitants. Set in the north of Cumbria, of which it is the county city, Carlisle is just ten miles from the Scottish border, and much of its history is linked with that country. Long before the Romans arrived the area was held by the Brigantes, a tribe whose lands encompassed swathes of Northern England and up into Scotland. The Romans reached Carlisle in 72AD, building a wooden fort there, later using stone to improve it. They stayed in Carlisle until their withdrawal from Britain in the 5th century.
