Canonbie is a rural village in Eskdale in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland situated 5 miles south-east of Langholm and 2 miles inside the Scottish Border on the River Esk. The village developed in the Middle Ages after the Augustinian priory was founded during the reign of David the first (1124-1153), as the village was situated in the middle of the debating lands and often caught up in conflict it was named ‘Canonbie’ or ‘town of canons’. During the 19th and 20th centuries the main industry was mining for both coal and lime.
