Campbeltown is a large town and former Royal Burgh on the west coast of Argyll and Bute in Scotland, situated at the head of Campbeltown Loch on the Kintyre Peninsular. Campbeltown was founded in 1607 by the 7th Earl of Argyll, previously it had been known as Kinlochkilkerran (head of the Loch by the Kirk of St. Keiran) the ancient town was founded by St. Keiran in the 6th century. The saint had lived on Davaar Island which sits just outside the bay; St Keirans Cave has a 19th century painting of the Crucifixion and can be visited at low tide.
