Calverton is a village in Nottinghamshire, situated about eight miles north east of Nottingham. The name Calverton means 'calf enclosure', suggesting that in the early days the village was built on the cattle trade. Originally a very small village, Calverton grew with the advent of coal mining in the area. Calverton Colliery was opened in 1953 and was the main employer in the village until about the 1990's. British Coal closed the mine in 1994 but it reopened soon afterwards under private ownership. By the time the colliery finally closed in 1999, it was no longer the main employer in the village.
