Kielder village, a small rural community, is located close to the Scottish border at the very top of Northumberland in the North Tyne Valley. It is best known for its sections of Hadrian’s Wall and for having the largest man-made lake in Europe. Although now situated at the head of the reservoir, the area was once wild and uncultivated, surrounded by moors and bogs, full of turbulence and history. The name Kielder comes from Kielder Burn meaning violent stream. Kielder village lay in a remote area with few inhabitants and suffered border raids and warfare for several centuries.
