Butcombe is a small village situated 10 miles to the south of Bristol, with easy access to the A38. It is situated close to two lakes, Blagdon Lake and Chew Valley Lake. Blagdon Lake was originally created by Bristol Water who dammed the River Yeo in 1891 and completed the lake in 1899. The Wrington Vale Light Railway was built mainly to bring up building materials. Today the lake is a nature reserve, but also provides drinking water and fishing. The original suction tanks are now used for trout rearing.
