Lying to the south of the market town of Kendal the village of Burton on the edge of the Lake District can trace its history back to before the Domesday Book when it was referred to as Bortun. Its sense of history is apparent today in some of the street names, Neddy Hill and Cocking Yard that are to be found here, the Cocking Yard (cobbled yard) is lined with 17th and 18th century cottages providing a picturesque aspect of this interesting village. Burton grew as a village due to its convenient location for travellers journeying through Cumbria, the Kings Arms and the Royal Hotel – the Kings Arms an old coaching inn dating back to around 1763.
