Burray is a small Orkney island which forms part of the archipelago ring of islands around the Scapa Flow in Scotland; it is situated with the Mainland of Orkney and the Holm Sound to the north, the island of South Ronaldsay and the Water Sound to the south and the island Hunda and the Hunda Sound to the west. Following the sinking of the ship HMS Royal Oak during WWII, the Churchill Barrier Causeways were built to prevent German U-boats entering the Scapa Flow; these barriers connect Burray to Mainland Orkney, South Ronaldsay and the smaller islets Lamb Holm and Glimps Holm.
