Burgess Hill - 11 miles north of Brighton, 4 miles south of Haywards Heath, is a fairly modern town having grown with the opening of the London to Brighton railway. It was known as Burgesthill in 1597 and is probably named after the family of John Burgeys a land owner in the 14th century; which `Hill` is still open to speculation. Until the opening of the railway most of the land that the town now sits on was common land -St.Johns Common - and was used for grazing, foraging and collecting fuel. It was also the site of the midsummer fair held since the C14th on the 24th June, the last Sheep & Lamb fair was held in 1912.
