Bruton is a village in Somerset, situated on the River Brue seven miles south east of Shepton Mallet. The village sits in a cosy vale created by the rolling hills that surround it. Bruton was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Briuuetone, meaning 'Vigorously flowing river' from the Old English tor and Celtic briw meaning vigor. The river still flows hard today, right through the centre of the town, and can be prone to flooding after prolonged spells of heavy rain. Bruton has four pubs, The Castle Inn, The Sun Inn, The Blue Ball and The Royal Oak.
