In the borough or Redcar and Cleveland, in the parish of Skelton and Brotton, lies the small village of Brotton about two and a half miles south east of Saltburn-by-the-sea, fifteen miles east of Middlesbrough in north east England. Listed in the Domesday Book, known in medieval times as Broctune, the village name means literally ‘town on the brow of a hill’. The hill being Warsett Hill, situated on top of the large Huntcliffe, the site of one of many Roman signal stations built to defend against Anglo-Saxon attack.
