Brockworth is situated along the Ermin Way, the old Roman Road that linked Gloucester with Cirencester, where it crosses the even older Green Street an ancient salt-way leading from Coopers Hill to Churchdown Hill and onward to Droitwich. To the Anglo Saxons it was known as Brocwuthin; werthin (worth) = an enclosure and broc = brook. But there were settlers much earlier here-abouts, on top of Coopers Hill are the remains of an Iron Age hill fort with rampart and protective mounds and ditches. Today Brockworth has been submerged in the suburbs of Gloucester, but is home to some exceptional buildings; Brockworth Court, built in 1540 by Richard Hart the last Prior of Lanthony; the Tythe Barn (refurbished in 2003 and home to the Barn Owl Sanctuary) is probably fifteenth century in origin and the parish church of St.
